Kayci N. Timmons

Kayci Timmons completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Alabama, where she was a double major in Political Science and Philosophy. Kayci graduated early and as a member of the Dean’s List in December of 2013. During her time at Alabama, Kayci was a member and competitor on the University of Alabama’s Ethics Bowl Team. This team was comprised of upper classmen that formulated ethical arguments to be presented before judges at a regional competition that more than twenty other schools participated in. While on the team, the topics for argument included topics of ethical controversy such as the death penalty. In addition, Kayci also served as a Teaching Assistant in the Department of Philosophy for the course of Honors Deductive Logic. During her time as a T.A., Kayci led class lectures, held office hours, and graded weekly assignments, mid-terms, and final examinations for the students in the class.
Kayci then received an academic scholarship to attend Mercer University’s Walter F. George School of Law, where she earned her Juris Doctor degree in May of 2017. During her time at Mercer Law, Kayci served as a Mentor in the Association of Women Law Students, Vice President of the National Security Law Society, and participated in the IP Inn of Court in Atlanta. Kayci got involved in Moot Court, an appellate advocacy program at the law school, where students are selected to compete in competitions around the United States. As a first year law student, Kayci participated in the Lawson Moot Court Competition, where she placed in the Top 8. After first year, Kayci was chosen to compete in the school’s John J. Gibbons National Moot Court team, where she wrote a brief and argued before a panel of judges on a mock United State’s Supreme Court in Newark, New Jersey. Kayci was chosen to compete in this competition for two years in a row, both her second and third year of law school. During her time at Mercer, she also served as an Executive Board member for Mercer Advocacy Council, an organization that oversaw all of the mock trial, moot court, client counseling, and negotiations teams at Mercer. Kayci’s role on the Board was as the Lawson Moot Court Competition Editor, where she drafted a legal problem and oversaw the competition during her third year. Job History Prior to law school, Kayci served as a legal intern at the law office of Turner & Turner, P.C., in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Turner & Turner was a general practice firm that mainly focused on Social Security/Disability and Divorce cases. During her time at Turner & Turner, Kayci was exposed to a wide variety of legal practice by attending multiple hearings, helping to edit documents, communicating with clients, serving subpoenas, and filing court documents. While attending law school, Kayci interned at the Macon-Bibb County Attorney’s Office in Macon, Georgia. At the County Attorney’s Office, Kayci met with the Mayor and County Commissioners regularly, and researched and drafted resolutions and ordinances for various county issues. Kayci also interned in the Office of Chief Counsel of the Federal Highway Administration in Atlanta, Georgia during law school. Kayci assisted the South Field Legal Services Division with various federal matters involving the Federal Tort Claims Act, Freedom of Information Act, Endangered Species Act, and the National Environmental Policy Act. During her time at FHWA, Kayci also assisted the Department of Justice and drafted response motions and briefs. The South Field Legal Services Division covered eleven states, including Puerto Rico. Since passing the bar exam in 2017, Kayci has worked as an attorney with J. Scott Key, LLC, at Miller & Key, P.A. Kayci has handled and drafted motions and briefs for all levels of appeals from superior courts to the Supreme Court of Georgia. Examples include motion for new trials, briefs of appellant, briefs of appellee, certificates of probable cause, motions for reconsideration, and habeas petitions. Kayci has appeared before the Supreme Court and Georgia Court of Appeals and argued a case before the Supreme Court of Georgia in April of 2018. She currently teaches Sunday school to third graders. Kayci continues to assist Mercer University School of Law’s Advocacy Council with their Moot Court program, serving as a benching judge for numerous teams to help prepare them for competition. Kayci is originally from Birmingham, Alabama, and currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia. Kayci is married to Kyle Harris Timmons, who also attended Mercer Law School and is now an attorney clerking for the Chief Judge of the Griffin Judicial Circuit. Kayci enjoys traveling, coffee shops, sports, and hiking! |
